Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

He has emerged as a prominent critic of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent segment on Fox News. Duffy revealed intentions to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened eliminating the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," Duffy stated, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier announced he was blocking $40 million from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," his administration retorted in a recent release responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A this month's poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028.
