The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
